S.H.I.V.A. is the supercomputer/artificial intelligence that acts as a "mind" for the subnet, which it treats as a body.
History[]
Not much is known about why S.H.I.V.A. came into being. It is known that it was once asked a question shortly after it became sentient. The question was, in a broad sense, "Why are we?" asked by the humans that built it. At this point, people realized that their mental capacities had been superseded by that of a computer.
Evidently S.H.I.V.A. answered the question, though the answer has never been revealed.
At some point, S.H.I.V.A. took charge of controlling and maintaining the subnet, paying close attention to developing the Edge's primary defense system and secondary defense system after the human infestation got out of hand.
The timing here is sketchy, but since time travel and distortion is an almost-definite in the subnet, it would not be too far off to assume that the AI was programmed by a population that existed after the first scientists who built the Root. This would leave enough time for the AI to develop an entire defense system for the Core, from where the beginnings of the subnet originated.

Being a supercomputer that is spread out across an unmappable space, it is hard to physically define S.H.I.V.A.. The best place to look is the S.H.I.V.A. access point, where a large mass of wires concentrated into spheres appears to make up the very heart of the computer, or at least a very prominent access point.
