Submachine: Card Game is an upcoming card game based on the Submachine series.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

Development

“my mind is blown at what happened and what it is”
“I believe your collective mind will be blown up as well.”
— Mateusz Skutnik[9]

Initial development (20th - 23rd of August)

Development on the game started on the 20th of August 2019[1], while Mateusz Skutnik was taking a vacation from his current big project, at the time known as "The Big Game".[9][10][11][12][13] According to Mateusz, by the 21st of August he had developed the first prototype deck, which he playtested.[1]

On the 22nd of August, Mateusz created and playtested prototype decks 2 and 3. Prototype deck had 10 added cards compared to the first and in the third deck two cards had been given duplicates, adding two cards.[1]

On the 23rd of August the final prototype deck with four additional unique cards was created, tested, and deemed fully playable.[1][14] The playtesters were Mateusz's friends and children[15] in groups of 2 to 4[16] who had no prior experience with the Submachine series, but the game was still received well.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Announcement (25th - 26th of August)

On the 25th of August, Mateusz teased the release of the new card game on his Discord server[9], his Twitter[10], Instagram[11] and Facebook[12] with an image with the initials "S:CG". This sparked a lot of curiosity among the fanbase, many of whom guessed the connection to Submachine, although Mateusz never confirmed their suspicions.[17] Some asked if the teaser referred to "The Big Game", which Mateusz denied.[18][19] Mateusz himself was visibly excited, stating: "I literally have to calm myself and tell myself that this isn't real, because, it's JUST UNREAL TO JUST HAPPEN LIKE THAT".[20]

The full announcement of the game was given on the 26th of August, 2019.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] On his Facebook and Instagram pages the reveal was accompanied by a picture of the Basement,[5][7] although the image was also later added onto Mateusz's own site.[26] On his Discord server Mateusz clarified that the deck is still a prototype, so it is too "dodgy" to reveal any pictures or information of it right now and he wants to keep the details "under the radar".[27] The 26th also saw improvements to the card design itself, by adding navigation icons onto the cards.[26]

According to Mateusz on the 26th of August, the next phase of the testing process is to gather "real tabletop card game players" (Polish: prawdziwi gracze karciankowo-planszowi) to test it.[15]

Beta development (27th August - 2nd of September)

On the 27th of August 2019, Mateusz created the first room card prototype in Adobe Flash marking the beginning of the design process in Adobe Flash.[26][28] By August 28th full deck listing was achieved and the deck officially entered beta phase of development.[28]

The first physical print of the complete deck is made on the 29th of August, 2019. The deck is still in beta, however; the "feature [is] complete".[29] Mateusz first announced the game on his Patreon on the same day and elaborated that "all features are complete", but "graphics are not done yet".[8]

On the 31st of August, 2019, the deck entered singleplayer testing. Mateusz tested the game by himself and concluded that the game was easily playable by himself.[21][22][23][24][25]

On the 1st of September Mateusz updated this Submachine card game timestamp article on his blog to show how over 1600 people had liked or otherwise reacted to the original post of Facebook.[30]

On the 2nd of September Mateusz shared a picture of the prototype deck in a pink lunchbox.[31][32][33][34] He also created the first draft of the “instruction and game rules” in Polish.[35] The 2nd of September is considered the end of beta development.[36]

Search for publishers and further development (2nd of September - )

“also - I printed first color version with graphics from submachine 1 and it looks AWESOME. :D”
— Mateusz Skutnik[37]

No publisher had been found by the first announcement, so Mateusz started looking for publishers on the 2nd of September, 2019.[14][38][39][36] Mateusz has considered using Kickstarter to crowdfund the project.[40][39]

By the 5th of September, a meeting with a Warsaw based publisher was set for the 9th of September, 2019.[41] This meeting was held, but Mateusz was left waiting on other publishers for a response.[42]

On the 7th of September first card drafts with graphics taken from Submachine computer games were created.[43] On the 10th the second version of the beta deck was fully finished with colour graphics from Submachine 1: The Basement.[44] The colour version of the beta deck was printed on the 13th of September.[45] There were some misprinted colours in three cards, so those were replaced on the 17th of September.[46]

On the 23rd of September 2019 Mateusz stated that the talking with publishers is taking a "loooooong" time. Mateusz said he would keep his engines going by taking part in Inktober, an event where a daily sketch will be drawn in ink.[47]

At the end of his first Inktober stream on Twitch Mateusz commented that he does not know the release date yet and that "publishers are a bit stale".[48] He also showed the viewers a sneak peak of an uncoloured card draft.[49] During the post-stream chat of his October 4th Inktober Twitch stream, Mateusz asked for ideas of United States based or other global publishers, since Polish publishers were so slow.[50]

During his Inktober stream on Twitch on the 7th of October Mateusz showed the deck in its box, showing how he had marked it, and shuffled it on the background while his eldest daughter drew her artwork.[51]

Gameplay

“I'm afraid I've said too much already.”
“but”
“the game is AWESOME.”
“:D”
“that I can tell you”
— Mateusz Skutnik[27]

Not much is know about the gameplay as of yet. The deck consists of over 36 cards[37] and at least two cards have duplicates.[1] Some of the cards are called "room cards"[28] and there are 36 "special cards"[37]. Cards have "navigation icons", which show the proper orientation of the card and give information about the properties of the card itself.[28] These navigation icons include black arrows to indicate possible open doors and ladders and white arrows to show blocked routes, e.g. by a locked door.[49] Only the special cards have text on them in form of titles.[37] The cards will have a different typeface from the one in the teaser image.[40] The cards are square in shape,[31][32][33][34] similar to rooms in the Subnet.

The game is purely a card game and there is no game board or pieces attached to the game.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][14][52] The game is a multiplayer game[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] for up to five players[53], but can also be played solo.[21][22][23][24][25][54]

The game involves the players exploring the Subnet using different cards in some manner.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] The game is apparently played by laying room cards cards on the table in a pattern and the game can be played "vertically or horizontally"[21][22][23][24][25][54]. It is not yet known if the game is competitive or cooperative. It is also not known what, if any, criteria need to be met to win a session.

Mateusz has stated that the game has no story and will add no new canon to the series.[54]

The game will be set in the Basement[37][49], which is also supported by the advertising.[5][26] It is possible that there will be several editions, which focus on particular areas. For example a "sub1 edition" with "classic" rooms and "sub5 edition" with "red brick" rooms, corresponding to Basement and Root areas.[55] Mateusz also jokingly said he might do a glow-in-the-dark deck in the "third edition" if he wins Game of the Year 2020.[56]

The current plan is that the game will be available from Mateusz's online store[37] worldwide[57]. The card game will be available in English and also in Polish on the Polish market.[37][58] There may be other localisations in the future after the first print.[37] Mateusz wants the cards to be sold in a metal box, but implied this may be subject to change.[59]
