The Root has been described as the first submachine ever created. It was built in 1904, and within it, the submachine was possibly experimented and unleashed. Now the Root is likely abandoned.

There is a system for transporting from one location to another inside the Root, that makes use of the cipher plates. The following is a list of locations in the Root, where "0" represents no cipher plate, "1" represents cipher plate 1 and "2" represents cipher plate 2. clrl

This is the initial area of the Root. In this location there is an observation room, as well as the cipher plate storage. clrl

This room is where the cipher plate 2 is, also it has an old, manual charger device. This room also has a chair and three pipes that look like they could be used for communication. clrl

(2,0) - The Lighthouse
This section of the Root is home to a very old pipe device, that has exploded after the air pressure inside it became too great. The pipe had three (possibly four) knobs which rather look like the bells in old alarm clocks. One of them was shot in to the bricked-up door with such force that it shattered letting the player in. The other side of the door is the same Lighthouse from Submachine 2, with the Wisdom Gem still in place. clrl

(1,2) - Metal Box Room
The Metal Box Room is a room with a Metal Box. Inside this box there is a Wisdom Gem, and the only way to obtain it is by melting the box in the acid in the Citric Acid Room. This room was made as a 3D puzzle because Mateusz Skutnik wanted to go beyond the typical 2D structure. clrl

Submachine 5: The Root (or Sub5, stylized as Submachine 5: the root) is the fifth installment of the main Submachine series.

Plot

The player starts in a different part of the lab than in Submachine 4. Mur sends a message on a computer telling the player to gather 3 wisdom gems, and then to explore the outer reaches of the net. The player then travels to the Root - the original submachine - which is reached via the code 552 on the same portal used in Submachine 4. Then, with a new teleporter system exclusive to the Root using cipher plates, the player finds connections to the lighthouse and the ancient room to collect 2 of the wisdom gems. The player later finds the third gem in a different location in the Root.

After finding the gems, the player leaves the Root and teleports to the corridor (747), using the gems in a machine to travel to the Edge.
